On Monday, Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio affirmed that Libya is experiencing a decisive turning point in its political stability, and that “the path towards lasting peace and stability in the country has been given a new impetus.”

In his speech at the Italian-Libyan Business Forum, which was held with the participation of Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, who is currently visiting Rome, Di Maio stressed, “we can today count on a new and united Libya. It is thanks to the great efforts of the Government of National Unity (GNU). Our companies can look to Libya with renewed confidence.”

He added that Italy and Libya can also be close and strategic partners in telecommunications and medicine, stating, “It is crucial for our businesses to be able to work in a framework that facilitates new investment, which requires also financial stabilization, in a climate of confidence for businesses and the necessary security conditions to operate in.”

“Italy has never abandoned Libya and the embassy has always continued to operate, even in the most difficult moments,” Di Maio emphasised, adding, “we are now involved in further strengthening the Italian institutional presence in Libya, through the imminent reactivation of the consulate in Benghazi, and the opening of an honorary consulate in Fezzan’s Sebha.”

“Over the coming months, we will also strengthen our presence in Tripoli with a promotional desk for Italian companies and a cultural attache at our embassy,” the FM said.
