ISIS Claims Responsibility for Suicide Attack in Southern Libya

On Sunday, the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for a car bombing in the southern city of Sebha. The blast killed a senior police officer, according to a pro-IS news agency statement.

The group said one of its members, Mohamed El-Muhajer stormed a checkpoint on Sunday with an explosives-laden car. The blast killed at least two people, including the police officer, local authorities and medics said. It was unclear if the attacker was included in the tally.

Sebha is located about 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Taraghin, where Islamic State extremists carried out a bomb attack last year, that caused no casualties.

Libya has suffered a decade of chaos and violence since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising ousted former leader, Muammar Gaddafi. Its two main warring sides consented to a new unified government earlier this year.
