US Supports A Unified Libya Without Foreign Interference

The United States (US) Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood, said that the US supports a sovereign, stable, unified Libya with no foreign interference, and a state capable of combating terrorism within its borders.

“We firmly oppose all military escalation and all foreign military intervention, which will only deepen and prolong the conflict,” Hood said during a telephonic press briefing, according to the US Department of State on Friday.

Hood noted that the US will continue to promote international efforts, in the months ahead, to support the interim government as it prepares for the elections and works to end the conflict.

He called on Turkey to immediately pull out its forces, “whether they are regular forces, mercenaries, or something else.”

Notably, the Prime Minister of the Libya’s Interim Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid Dbaiba, met with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken in Berlin. They met on the side lines of the second international conference on Libya hosted by Germany.

“The US Secretary and Libayn Interim Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of full implementation of the October 23rd, 2020 ceasefire agreement, including the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya,” the Department of State said on Thursday.

“Blinken reiterated the US’ commitment to increasing diplomatic support for progress in Libya,” the statement concluded.
