Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov accused NATO of destroying the Libyan state due to its intervention and policies in Libya since 2011.

“When NATO intervened in Libya, it contributed to the destruction of the state,” Lavrov told reporters after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu in Antalya on Wednesday.

“But now it is necessary to contain all Libyan parties to engage in the political process, including the Libyan National Army (LNA),” Lavrov added.

The Russian FM expressed his conviction that the Libyan people should regain control of the affairs in their country.

The two FM’s were keen to focus in particular on the developments of the Libyan crisis. They reviewed the foreign policy initiatives of Moscow and Ankara, regarding a comprehensive settlement in the North-African country.

Notably, Lavrov reiterated his support for a peaceful solution in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations, stressing the need to involve all parties concerned in settling the Libyan crisis.

“We affirmed our support for the efforts being taken in the interest of reaching a peaceful solution as soon as possible for the Libyan crisis under the auspices of the United Nations,” Lavrov said at a joint press conference with Cavusoglu.

He expressed his readiness to help the new interim authorities hold a referendum on the constitution, and hold the general elections scheduled for 24 December 2021.
