On Saturday, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the official opening of the Libyan coastal road, saying that this was an important and long-awaited development for the people of Libya.

In a statement, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, hailed the crucial efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and extended his appreciation to the Presidency Council and the Government of National Unity for their support in securing this critical step.

The Secretary-General renewed his call to all concerned national and international stakeholders to expedite the implementation of the October 2020 Libyan Ceasefire Agreement, and to work together to implement the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum Roadmap to hold national elections on 24 December 2021.

He also reiterated the support of the United Nations to the people of Libya in their efforts to advance peace and stability.

The coastal road was closed in April 2019 when the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) launched a military campaign against the former Government of National Accord in and around Tripoli, which lasted more than a year.

In October 2020, the rival parties signed a UN-sponsored ceasefire agreement that ended the war.
