Peter Stano, the spokesperson for EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, said that the EU is well aware of the seriousness of the situation in Libya, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Borrell said he has received the message by Malta’s Foreign Minister calling on Brussels to take urgent action in Libya.

“We, in Europe, are aware of the seriousness of the situation in Libya, and our launch of the “IRINI” Naval Operation is an expression of our interest and our movement,” Stano said.

This month, the EU launched Operation “IRINI”. The operation aims to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya by deploying naval and aerial assets in the Mediterannean.
