Andrea Cozzolino, the Head of the European Parliament delegation to the Maghreb region, has said that Operation IRINI is meant to help implement the peace process in Libya.

Cozzolino spoke with Italian news outlet ‘Agenzia Nova’, confirming that IRINI is not meant to assist Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s forces by enforcing the UN arms embargo in the Mediterranean.

He emphasized that both sides should engage in dialogue, especially during the global COVID-19 crisis.

“We need an international framework for the reconstruction of the state in Libya in general,” added Cozzolino.

The European Union launched Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI on the April 1, 2020. The mission’s core task of implementing the UN arms embargo on Libya will be achieved through the use of aerial, satellite and maritime assets.
