Lavrov: Berlin Conference Decisions On Libya “Stuck In The Mud”

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, said that the decisions made at January’s Berlin conference on Libya, aimed at launching a political process are “stuck in the mud.”

“Implementing the decisions taken at the Berlin conference has come to a standstill at the moment. War has resurfaced” Lavrov said in a video conference with delegates of the ‘Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund’ on Tuesday.

Lavrov reiterated that it was Russia that had secured the participation of representatives from the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA) at that conference, adding “Regretfully, we didn’t get a direct answer to the question of whether the parties will support the decision” during the negotiations in Berlin.

“That is why, we supported those ideas that were formulated in Berlin, but the parties in question must be persuaded into approving those approaches. We were right once again,” Lavrov said, stressing that Russia continues to support political dialogue between the parties in Libya and the immediate appointment of a new UN special envoy.

On the 19th of January 2020, an international conference on settling the conflict in Libya was held in Berlin, where a set of measures to launch political dialogue between the GNA and the LNA were agreed upon.
