Libya’s GNA Says It Will Continue to Strike Perceived Threats Despite Ceasefire

The Presidential Council of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) has announced that it will continue to legitimately defend itself and strike perceived threats wherever they exist, in addition to targeting illegal armed groups that threaten the lives of Libyans throughout the country.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Presidential Council said that it welcomed voices throughout Libya that were opposed to the militarization of the state and supported calls for a democratic civil state.

The Presidential Council said that the past violations by the Libyan National Army (LNA) make it impossible to believe any declaration of a truce.

It added that Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s statements regarding the Libyan Political Agreement and its institutions “confirms that we do not have a partner for peace but we have a bloodthirsty person obsessed with power”.

“Any ceasefire, monitoring of violations and a real, actual truce requires international sponsorship, guarantees and mechanisms by which the work of the 5 + 5 committee supervised by the [United Nations Support Mission in Libya] would be activated,” the statement read.
