Bashagha Calls for Disarming Militias in Libyan Capital under UN Supervision

Libya’s Prime Minister-designate, Fathi Bashagha, called for the necessity of imposing security arrangements under the supervision of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to clear Tripoli of all types of all weapons.

In a tweet, Bashagha added, “security cannot be established and peace cannot be established without the presence of a state whose authorities enjoy constitutional and legal legitimacy, and this urges us to move forward towards parliamentary and presidential elections.”

The Prime Minister stressed that it is not possible to trust an outlaw group that pretends to guarantee the holding of elections while it lacks control over the security and safety of citizens.

Bashagha said that his government preferred peace to fighting and extended its hands to all parties and won a Libyan-Libyan consensus between the House of Representatives (HoR) and the High Council of State (HCS). “We crowned this consensus with the birth of a Libyan government for all Libyans without exception.”

He continued, “we are very keen to protect civilians and the sanctity of Libyan blood. The nnocent lives are threatened by the chaos.”

Notably, fierce clashes between armed groups erupted in Libya’s capital on Friday night, according to local media.

The intense fighting involved two influential militias from western Libya, local media reported.

No casualties or motive for the fighting were immediately apparent, but it is the latest violence to rock the country as two rival Prime Ministers vie for power.
