The Head of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, reiterated his objection to the EU’s latest mission to monitor the arms embargo on Libya in the Mediterranean.

He stressed the need to expand the mission’s scope to include aerial and land transfers of weapons, noting that a memorandum had been sent in this regard to the European Union.

In a phone call with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio on Wednesday, Al-Sarraj discussed the latest developments on the ground in Libya, bilateral relations, in addition to the EU Operation ‘IRINI’.

According to the media office of the Presidential Council, Di Maio reaffirmed Italy’s support for the GNA and praised the government’s measures to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.

Di Maio also expressed his gratitude for Libya’s solidarity with the Italian people in the face of the global pandemic, and for the support provided by the GNA to Italy.
