Libya’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Abdel Muttalib Thabet, said that despite the events Libya is going through, this will not distract it from working through the umbrella of the Arab League. It will pay attention to all other important issues, especially the Palestinian cause.

In his speech at the opening of the 158th session of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent delegates, which is being chaired by him, Thabet said, “the exceptional and difficult circumstances that the world is going through today may lead to the expansion of some of the conflicts, ensuring the existence of a common Arab position that enhances the Arab presence on the international arena.”

He added, “we must adhere to the Arab constants and legitimacy resolutions on Palestine in order to consolidate the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.”

Thabet expressed his hope that Libya’s presidency of this session would be an appropriate opportunity to support and enhance the role of the Arab League. This with the aim of establishing a comprehensive and realistic political settlement of the Libyan crisis in line with international resolutions.

Thabet pointed out that this settlement should be based on the comprehensive national dialogue as the only way to reach consensus on a constitutional path for holding presidential and parliamentary elections.
