EU’s Borrell Voices Concern over Escalation of Violence in Libya

On Monday, the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj held a telephone call with the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Chief, Josep Borrell, who expressed his concern over the escalation of violence in Libya.

Borrell said that a political solution was the only internationally recognized framework to end the current crisis in Libya, expressing his hope to resume the Geneva 5+5 military talks that had outlined a ceasefire mechanism.

He also discussed the goals of the EU’s Operation ‘IRINI’, which aims to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Al-Sarraj expressed his dissatisfaction with the EU’s failure to take a firmer position towards what he referred to as crimes being committed against civilians and national facilities in Tripoli by the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Al-Sarraj added that such violations amount to war crimes and a violation of the provisions of international humanitarian law.

He stressed that Operation ‘IRINI’ should be carried out on land, sea and air to stop the flow of arms to the LNA.
