Williams Discusses Libya at UN Security Council

Acting Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Stephanie Williams called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to political dialogue in Libya.

She noted that the Government of National Accord (GNA) did not abide by the ceasefire called for during the holy month of Ramadan.

In her briefing to the UN Security Council regarding recent developments in Libya, Williams said that the capture of Al-Watiya airbase by GNA forces may turn the situation in Libya into a full blown proxy war leading to a further increase in fighting in the country.

Williams called for the restoration of Mitiga International Airport into a civilian airport, expressing concerns over its use by the GNA’s airforce.

She added that both parties to the conflict who have committed war crimes must be held accountable.

Regarding COVID-19, she said that it has increased the security challenges in Tripoli and underlined the UN’s willingness to help the country cope with the pandemic.

She also welcomed the release of more than 2,000 prisoners in Libya as part of precautionary measures by the government.

The UNSMIL Head reaffirmed her support for the EU’s efforts to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya through its latest initiative, Operation ‘IRINI’.
