Dbaiba Reaffirms Remaining in Office Until Elections

The Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba reiterated that he will “remain in office until elections are held, and will hand over power to an elected government.”

In remarks to Tunisia’s Mosaique FM Radio, Dbaiba said his government “manages all the scene in the country at all levels, as well as controls all municipalities and security and intelligence services.”

He noted that the “parallel” government headed by rival Fathi Bashagha, “wants to disrupt the Libyan scene by establishing two governments. In fact, there is only one government, which is mine,” he added.

While he said that he is ready to hold elections two months from now, he revealed that his candidacy for the upcoming Presidential elections “is uncertain, and has not yet been decided.” He claimed that he “does not have the decision alone and that he needs to listen to his family’s opinion before announcing anything.”

Dbaiba once again defended the development of relations with Turkey, and said that his “absence from the Arab summit that was held recently in Algeria was natural, given that the Presidential Council is entrusted with representing the Libyan state abroad.”

Regarding relations with Egypt, the PM said that he “wants to build normal relations, get closer to Cairo, and reach an understanding on any difference in views.”

He praised the support of Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the Libyan elections, as well as that of Tunisian President, Kais Saied. He also hailed Morocco’s role in helping to resolve the various issues in Libya.

The PM stressed that the “solution must be Libyan-led.” He called on the parties to “seek elections, as they are a right for all Libyans. We want to achieve this project (elections), and consider that no other solutions can substitute,” he said.
