No Sudanese Forces in Libya, Says Deputy Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council

The Deputy Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Muhammad Hamdan Daqlo (also known as Hemedti) has denied the presence of Sudanese paramilitaries in Libya.

Several Libyan and regional media outlets have claimed that hundreds of Sudanese paramilitaries from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been deployed to Libya to fight on behalf of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Hamidati stated that Sudan has offered to mediate between the parties in Libya, but had not received any response from either side.

Oil rich Libya has been marred in chaos since a NATO-backed intervention overthrew Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Libya currently has two rival governments who are fighting for control of the capital, Tripoli, and a multitude of militias vying for a share of the country’s wealth.

The country’s internationally recognized government is based in Tripoli, while Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the LNA, is supported by a parallel administration based in Tobruk.
