Borrell Says EU’s Credibility At Stake in Libya

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell claimed that the situation in Libya was a test of the EU’s credibility, “right at our doorstep”.

“We have seen the absurd situation of fighters in Libya wearing masks to protect themselves against COVID-19, while exchanging fire with machine guns,” Borrell said.

“Germany has done excellent work in the framework of the Berlin Process for Libya – showing leadership while at the same time ‘thinking European’ by including other EU Member States in the process. This is a model for how European foreign policy can and should be built,” Borrell continued.

“We have launched Operation IRINI to help enforce the UN arms embargo – not everybody is happy with this, but all Member States need to invest in the process.”
