Turkey Stresses Need For Political Solution in Libya

On Tuesday, the spokesman for Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin said that a military solution to the Libyan crisis would not be effective, stressing that the Government of National Accord (GNA), has repeatedly voiced the need for a political solution to the conflict.

In an interview with France 24, Ibrahim Kalin said that countries that support, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), were on the wrong side of history. He claimed that Haftar was not the legitimate representative of the Libyan people, and exacerbated the war in the country.

Kalin stated that Haftar’s international backers should realize that he was not a reliable partner in Libya, noting that the GNA was cooperating with the international community’s efforts. “Turkey sent some advisors to help them [Libyan government] to bring a degree of balance to the conflict,” he added.

In closing, Kalin stressed that Turkey was looking for a political solution to the crisis, which has left the country without a central government for the past nine years. Since 2014, there have been two rival governments, one in the east and the other in the west, both claiming to be the legitimate state authority.
