Major General Khaled Shuaib, Governor of the Egyptian city of Matrouh, received Major General Khaled Al-Basta, Head of Libya’s Jabal Al-Akhdar Security Directorate. The meeting was attended by Mayor Khair Raslan, Head of the Council of Mayors and Sheikhs of Matrouh, Hajj Rahuma Al-Amiri, Sheikh Karim Bou Kharta and Mayor Imran Ambiwa.
Shuaib welcomed the Libyan officials and stressed the depth of the historical relations between Egypt and Libya, and the continuous cooperation.
He noted that the development of the Salloum land border is being completed.
In turn, Al-Basta presented a certificate of appreciation to Shuaib, in “appreciation of the popular, executive, and security cooperation that the people of Libya are experiencing from the Matrouh Governorate.” He praised Matrouh’s “important societal and humanitarian role in participating in reconciliation efforts, and mending the rift with the tribal extension and intermarriage relations between Matrouh and Libyan tribes.”
Earlier this month, Egyptian Parliament Speaker, Hanafy El-Gebali affirmed his support for efforts to reach a political settlement in Libya, including reaching a constitutional basis for elections.
This came during his press conference in Cairo, with the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh, and the Head of the High Council of State (HCS), Khaled Al-Mishri. El-Gebali said that “Egypt, for a year and a half, hosted the constitutional track meetings, under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
El-Gebali added that the meetings culminated in a consensus between the two officials on a constitutional basis. This will serve as a starting point towards unifying Libyan institutions. He described the meeting that took place between Saleh and Al-Mishri in Cairo as “fruitful.”
