Al-Agouri Urges German Companies to Return to Libya

On Wednesday, the Chairman of the Libyan Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Youssef Al-Agouri held talks with the German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Ohnmacht in Benghazi.

The two officials discussed the latest political developments in the country. In addition to a number of files of common interest, most notably the current joint cooperation programs.

During the meeting, Al-Agouri stressed the importance of German companies returning to Libya. He added that Germany has an exemplary record in economic and democratic transformation.

He also thanked Berlin for its “great efforts to support peace in Libya,” appreciating the current projects being carried out by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), “which aims to accelerate the development process of the country’s institutions.”

Al-Agouri noted that “federalism is a suitable solution to the current situation in Libya. In order to preserve the country’s unity, and ensure the fair distribution of wealth among all Libyans.”

In turn, Ohnmacht praised the depth of relations between the two countries, and reiterated his keenness to pursue mutual coordination on issues of common interest.

On Tuesday, Ohnmacht held a meeting with the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi.

The two sides affirmed the importance of a political solution based on, and in support of the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative, Abdoulaye Bathily.

On Monday, Ohnmacht and his accompanying delegation visited the city of Benghazi, where they met with Mayor Saqr Bojwari.

During the meeting, they discussed the development works currently being implemented by the German Foundation for International Cooperation, in addition to its technical support for modernizing the administrative aspects in various areas.

Ohnmacht highlighted the important role of German companies in the reconstruction of Libya, including the difficulties that hinder the return of German companies to resume their stalled projects. In addition to discussing the current political stalemate, which has been negatively affecting the services provided by the municipality. He also agreed on the need to enhance joint cooperation, and overcome any obstacles that might hinder the upcoming electoral process.
