Interim Government Education Minister Fawzi Boumriz issued a new decision to postpone the reopening of schools and universities until June 14.

In a statement, the Minister said that the decision is part of the precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19.

All schools in the North African country were closed in mid-March, in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

On Thursday, the Advisory Committee for managing the COVID-19 crisis addressed a letter to the Education Minister, calling on him to postpone the reopening of schools and universities until the epidemiological situation became clearer in the country.

The Committee stressed that the safety of pupils was a priority and educational institutions would be receiving the necessary hygiene and sterilizing supplies.

The total number of confirmed cases in Libya remains at 99, with 33 active cases, 41 successful recoveries, and five deaths.

Meanwhile, the ‘Anti-Covid-19 Supreme Committee’ has said that there needs to be a zero tolerance approach with respect to the curfew put in place by the government to contain the spread of the virus.
