Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has stressed the importance of expediting the appointment of a new UN Special Envoy to Libya.

He expressed his country’s concern regarding the continued shipment of weapons by external parties, saying that this contributes to aggravating the situation as well as increasing the suffering of the Libyan people.

Conte added that this conflict threatens Libya’s neighbours and European security.

During a telephone conversation with Fayez al-Sarraj, Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Conte demanded a return to the political track in accordance with the Security Council resolutions and the outputs of the Berlin Conference.

The Italian Prime Minister also said that the future of Libya must be determined by the will of the Libyan people not by foreign interference. He also called for the return of Libyan oil production.
