The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) stated on Tuesday that it was concerned regarding the arrest, detention, and ill-treatment of a large number of Egyptian nationals in the city of Tarhuna.

In its statement, UNSMIL said that this act may violate Libya’s obligations under international human rights law on the prohibition of “torture, inhuman, and degrading treatment or punishment.”

UNSMIL also welcomed the statement released by Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Accord (GNA). It called on local authorities in Tripoli to conduct a prompt investigation to uncover the fate and whereabouts of the Egyptian nationals.

Last Sunday, the GNA’s Ministry announced the whereabouts of the kidnapped workers was unknown.

The Ministry instructed the Criminal Investigation Department and the General Department of Security Operations to open an investigation into the incident and to prosecute the offenders.
