Libya’s National Development Agency has announced strong progress on the Sirte Port project, saying the facility is moving closer to full operation after the completion of several major stages.
The update came during a meeting chaired by Engineer Kamal Suleiman, Director of Strategic Projects at the National Development Agency. The meeting was attended by technical department officials, representatives of the Egyptian company The Ark, and consultancy firms supervising strategic projects in the Sirte area.
The discussions reviewed the progress of several vital infrastructure projects across the city, including strategic road schemes and the Sirte Port development project. Officials said work is advancing at a notable pace as the agency continues efforts to improve transport links, trade capacity, and logistics services in central Libya.
According to the National Development Agency, the meeting examined completion rates on strategic road projects, including the international road across its western, eastern, and southern sections. It also covered the Sirte-Jufra road, the Sirte-Harawa road, and the electronic gates project. These projects have reached advanced stages of implementation.
Participants also discussed the main challenges facing the work and ways to resolve them in order to maintain progress and meet the planned timelines.
On Sirte Port, the meeting reviewed the latest developments in the project, including completed work under the first phase, which involved dredging and deepening the navigation basin. The second phase, covering the construction of berths and operational facilities, is now close to completion.
Officials said the continued progress increases the chances of bringing the port into operation in the coming period. Once operational, Sirte Port is expected to support commercial activity, strengthen logistics services, and improve the city’s role as an economic centre.
The project is also expected to help connect Sirte with wider strategic transport networks extending towards Libya’s southern regions and deeper into Africa. This could strengthen the city’s position as a trade and transport hub, particularly as road projects continue to link Sirte with other parts of the country.
The National Development Agency has been advancing several infrastructure and reconstruction projects in Sirte, with a focus on roads, transport facilities, service projects, and strategic economic assets. The development of Sirte Port is one of the most important projects in this wider plan because of its expected role in trade, logistics, and regional connectivity.
The port project is seen as part of broader efforts to improve Libya’s infrastructure and support economic recovery through transport development. Its completion would provide Sirte with stronger access to maritime trade routes and improve the movement of goods through the city.
With dredging works completed and berth construction nearing the final stages, officials said the project is approaching a decisive phase.
