On Thursday, Taher Al-Baour, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), met with the Canadian Ambassador to Libya, Isabelle Savard in Tripoli. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors, aiming to bolster mutual interests.

During the discussions, the two parties delved into various aspects of the Libyan-Canadian relationship, exploring ways to enhance cooperation in different fields. Additionally, they addressed the latest developments on the Libyan political scene.

Ambassador Savard expressed the depth of the relationship between Canada and Libya, and reiterated the Canadian government’s commitment to supporting both local and international efforts to conduct fair elections in Libya, under equitable electoral laws.

This meeting underscores the ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce Libya’s international partnerships, and highlights Canada’s active role in supporting democratic processes in the region.

On Tuesday Ambassador Savard and her accompanying delegation were received by the Chairman of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayah, and HNEC member, Rabab Halab.

Ambassador Savard praised the Commission’s efforts in preparing for the municipal council elections, scheduled for early next year. The discussions focused on the latest developments in the electoral process and the Commission’s readiness to fulfil its responsibilities in accomplishing the upcoming electoral tasks.

Canada’s commitment to supporting Libya’s electoral process is a significant part of its foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of stable, democratic governance in the region. The ongoing collaboration between Canada and Libya underscores the international community’s role in facilitating peaceful, and democratic transitions.

The meeting highlights the importance of international support for Libya as the country moves towards key electoral events, a crucial step in its ongoing political transition and stability. This support from nations like Canada is vital in ensuring a successful and transparent electoral process in Libya.
