Trump and Macron Agree on Urgent Need to Stop Military Escalation in Libya

On Monday, US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron during which they discussed the latest developments in Libya.

In a statement, the White House said that the two leaders agreed on the urgent need for a ceasefire in Libya, as well as on the urgency to rapidly resume negotiations between the warring parties.

During the talks, Trump and Macron reiterated that military escalation on all sides must stop immediately in order to prevent the Libyan conflict from becoming even more dangerous and intractable.

Tensions between France and Turkey have escalated following an incident between Turkish warships and a French naval vessel in the Mediterranean.

France considers the event a hostile act under NATO’s rules of engagement. It also accuses Ankara of repeated violations of the UN arms embargo in Libya.

In a press conference with Tunisian President Kais Saied in Paris on Monday, Macron denounced Turkey’s interference in Libya and its military support to the Government of the National Accord (GNA). He claimed Turkey was playing “a dangerous game”.
