The Shahat Antiquities Office has received the Italian archaeological mission from the University of Chieti as it begins its new fieldwork season in Libya’s ancient city of Shahat for 2026.

The mission, led by Professor Olivia Menozzi, arrived on Saturday, 4 July 2026, as part of ongoing scientific cooperation between Libyan antiquities authorities and international archaeological teams.

During the meeting, officials discussed the mission’s work programme for the current season, including its scientific and research plan inside the archaeological city of Shahat. The two sides also reviewed fieldwork arrangements to ensure the project is carried out according to recognised scientific standards.

The new season continues the long-running cooperation between the Shahat Antiquities Office and the Italian archaeological mission. It is expected to support archaeological research, documentation and preservation efforts in one of Libya’s most important historic sites.

Shahat, known in antiquity as Cyrene, is home to major archaeological remains that reflect Libya’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The mission’s work is expected to contribute to further understanding of the city’s past and help protect its ancient landmarks for future generations.Short Titles
