Libyan Parliament Speaker Says Egyptian Intervention In Libya Is Possible

The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), Ageela Saleh, claimed that he has not requested Egypt to intervene in Libya’s conflict. He also reiterated his support for the Cairo Declaration that paves the way for peace talks and elections in Libya.

In an interview with “Al-Hurra” news channel, Saleh said that the request for official intervention was still very possible. This would occur if the Government of National Accord (GNA) and its ally, Turkey, rejected the ceasefire initiatives and continued threatening cities and vital areas, he said.

The HoR Speaker stressed that if GNA forces crossed certain lines that pose a threat to the vital institutions of the country, he would ask for a formal intervention.

Saleh welcomed Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi’s response to the Arab League’s calls to support the Libyan National Army (LNA) in its war against terrorism and foreign intervention.

El-Sisi called for an immediate ceasefire and announced that should Cairo decide to intervene in Libya, it would be “legitimate”.

The Speaker called on the international community and the UN to activate the outcomes of the Berlin Conference and listen to the voice of peace contained in the Cairo Declaration.

He pointed out that Egypt is aware of the reality of the crisis in Libya and its impact on its own security and stability.
