Libyan National Security Advisor Ibrahim Bushnaf and European Union (EU) Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, held talks in Tripoli on Wednesday to assess developments, with a focus on collaborative efforts to address security challenges and enhance political stability.

The discussions delved into evolving political dynamics within Libya and the broader region, identifying effective strategies for promoting stability and progress, including the EU’s potential role in supporting free and fair elections crucial for Libya’s democratic transition.

Bushnaf outlined the council’s vision for a resolution centered on facilitating a comprehensive Libyan-led dialogue to expand political participation and ensure the voices of various factions shape the country’s future, proposed under UN guidance for national reconciliation and unity.

The meeting emphasized the importance of continued security cooperation between Libya and the EU, crucial for addressing complex security challenges such as terrorism and migration management, ensuring stability not only in Libya but also in the Mediterranean region.

Since the 2011 uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has grappled with instability, resulting in rival governments and militias, intensifying efforts in recent years to bring factions to the negotiating table for a unified, democratic government.

The EU’s active involvement in supporting peace initiatives recognizes the significance of Libya’s stability for regional security and addressing issues like irregular migration, with implications for Europe.
