The UK Embassy in Libya has issued a statement emphasizing the persistent challenges faced by the residents of Derna and surrounding regions, six months following the catastrophic impact of Storm Daniel in northeast Libya.

The embassy underscored the importance of transparent, accountable, and collaborative efforts in the reconstruction process to ensure a stable and prosperous recovery for those affected by the floods.

The statement also acknowledged the ongoing difficulties of tragedy, displacement, and uncertainty among the community, with a commitment to support the flood victims. The UK’s contribution to the United Nations’ relief efforts ranks as the second-largest globally, including support for three clinics treating approximately 500 patients, the delivery of 55 tonnes of relief materials, and a donation of $5 million towards disaster relief efforts.

Additionally, the statement references the postponement of the Derna Dam collapse case to March 24 by a Libyan court, indicating the legal proceedings against the accused for negligence, mismanagement, and financial waste. The Attorney General’s investigations have highlighted administrative failures and lack of maintenance that contributed to the storm’s devastation, which resulted in significant loss of life and damage in Derna and other eastern Libyan cities.
