Osama Hammad, the Libyan Prime Minister-designate, has directed Abubakr Al-Zawi, the Deputy Minister of Local Governance, to prepare 15,000 comprehensive Ramadan food baskets for distribution among families affected by recent floods in eastern region cities.
The Prime Minister urged the Deputy Minister to coordinate with the Zakat Fund and municipal mayors to establish a distribution mechanism ensuring smooth delivery to all targeted families, including those who have welcomed displaced persons.
Notably, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has emphasized the need to prioritize reconstruction activities in the Derna region of eastern Libya, severely impacted by Mediterranean Storm Daniel.
Expressing condolences for the tragic losses, UNSMIL advocates for rapid rebuilding efforts tailored to the needs of affected communities.
Highlighting the resilience of local communities, the mission encourages the creation of a national platform for coordinated reconstruction, ensuring transparent fund management for long-term recovery and accountability.
UNSMIL is committed to supporting an inclusive recovery process, focusing on improving the livelihoods of flood-affected populations.
Following the storm, the United Nations, along with its partners, provided emergency assistance to 247,000 people in Derna and other impacted regions. As the initial humanitarian response phase concludes, UNSMIL remains dedicated to aiding Derna’s recovery efforts in collaboration with local and international partners.
The disaster on September 10 caused extensive damage in eastern Libyan cities, including Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, and Sousse, with thousands of fatalities, injuries, and missing persons reported. Investigations by the Libyan Attorney General revealed significant negligence in dam maintenance in Derna, highlighting the lack of alarm systems, inadequate cleaning, and routine maintenance as contributing factors to the disaster’s severity.
