On Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Mohamed Siala, held a meeting with the EU’s Ambassador to Libya, Alan Bugeja, in Tripoli.

In a statement, the Ministry’s media office said that the officials discussed the latest developments in Libya and the role of the EU in the political process.

The duo also stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination between Libya and the EU in combating the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Bugeja held another meeting with the GNA’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq during which they discussed the EU-led ‘IRINI’ naval operation.

Maiteeq claimed that the mission failed to observe air control and the land borders controlled by the Libyan National Army, led by Field Marshal, Khalifa Haftar.

Operation ‘IRINI’ was launched with the EU Foreign Ministers’ approval on 31 March. The mission aims to operate in the air and sea.

It uses satellites to ensure that all countries respect Libya’s arms embargo.

The EU forces will also monitor illegal oil
exports, prevent human trafficking, and contribute to the training of the Libyan coast guard and navy.

The Ambassador expressed his hope that the EU will have an effective role in bringing an end to the Libyan crisis.
