On Monday, the United States (US) reiterated its support for efforts to unify and professionalize Libya’s military institutions, aimed at establishing enduring peace and stability in the region.

This confirmation came as part of an announcement by the US Embassy regarding the participation of Libyan military officials in the African Land Forces Summit (ALFS), which took place last week in Zambia.

The summit, which was sponsored by the US Army Chiefs of Staff and co-hosted by the US Army’s Southern European Task Force in Africa along with the Zambian Army, saw the gathering of 750 delegates from various African nations and other partnering countries.

The event focused on enhancing military cooperation and advancing peacekeeping capabilities across the continent.

During the summit, Libyan representatives had the opportunity to engage with a diverse array of military leaders, sharing experiences and discussing strategies for military reform and operational improvement.

The US Embassy emphasized that Libya’s participation is a part of ongoing American efforts to assist Libya in consolidating its military forces, which is critical for the nation’s long-term stability and security.

Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been embroiled in ongoing conflict and political instability, leading to a fragmented security landscape.

Various militias and two major rival governments—one based in Tripoli and the other in Tobruk. This division has resulted in a power vacuum and made the unification of the country’s military forces a critical priority for achieving lasting peace and stability.

The need to professionalize and unify Libya’s military institutions is widely recognized as essential for the country’s recovery and for the maintenance of regional security. Efforts towards this goal have been supported by the United Nations and a range of international partners, with the United States playing a significant role.

US support for Libya includes not only diplomatic backing but also military training and security assistance aimed at bolstering a cohesive national military force capable of countering terrorism and managing internal conflicts.
