On Thursday, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al Mnifi, held talks with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 33rd Arab Summit held in Bahrain.

The talks focused on the ongoing situation in Libya and the crucial role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in facilitating a unified and consensual path forward for the country.

Al Mnifi and the UN Secretary-General addressed the complex political and security challenges Libya faces. They emphasized the importance of a unified and peaceful approach to overcome years of conflict and instability. Guterres reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Libya in its pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.

The conversation highlighted UNSMIL’s critical efforts in fostering dialogue among Libyan factions. The mission aims to support Libya in achieving a stable and inclusive political process, with a strong focus on national unity and reconciliation. Both leaders stressed the necessity of a consensual and inclusive political solution to Libya’s challenges.

Libya has been struggling with internal conflict since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, leading to fragmented governance and rival factions competing for control. Despite international support and mediation, efforts to establish a unified government have faced numerous obstacles.

The United Nations has been actively involved in peacekeeping and mediation efforts in Libya through UNSMIL. Established in 2011, UNSMIL’s mandate includes supporting the transitional government, promoting human rights, and assisting in the disarmament and reintegration of armed groups.

In his address today during the Arab Summit, Al Mnifi announced Libya’s partnership with South Africa in initiating a genocide case against the Israeli occupation at the International Court of Justice. This move, aimed at galvanizing Arab and global support for Palestine, signifies a robust step towards advocating for justice on an international platform.

Discussing Libya’s national matters, Al Mnifi praised the ongoing cooperation between Arab states and the international community that has contributed to the security and stability in Libya. He noted positive developments in the political process, emphasizing the country’s progress toward more stable governance.

Al Mnifi reaffirmed the Presidential Council’s commitment to working with all domestic factions to steer the nation towards imminent elections, marking a pivotal step in ending Libya’s transitional phases.
