The National Human Rights Institution in Libya (NIHRL) has condemned the recent armed clashes in the city of Al-Zawiya, labeling them as a failure of the Dbaiba government. The commission calls on the Presidential Council and the government to conduct an urgent investigation.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the NIHRL expressed that the resurgence of violence and clashes between armed groups and militias legitimized by the Government of National Unity (GNU) represents a significant failure of the Ministry of Interior.
The statement further emphasized the urgent need to restructure and reform the security sector by dismantling undisciplined and unlawful armed formations.
The NIHRL urged the Presidential Council and the government to launch a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the causes of the violence and clashes, ensuring accountability and bringing the responsible parties to justice.
Additionally, the NIHRL called on the international community to fulfill its legal and humanitarian responsibilities by adding the names of warlords and their aides to the United Nations Security Council sanctions list.
The statement highlighted that the clashes and violence between armed groups have turned residential neighborhoods and streets into war zones, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries.
The NIHRL demanded an immediate cessation of violence and armed clashes in the city of Zawiya and its outskirts, and the establishment of safe corridors to enable ambulance teams and the Red Crescent to evacuate civilians and stranded families.
The commission also advised all citizens and residents in conflict and tension areas to avoid moving around these zones and to exercise caution until the situation stabilizes.
