A team of engineers from China’s PowerChina and Portugal’s Future Engineering Design conducted an inspection tour at Libya’s Benina International Airport. This visit is part of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund’s plan to develop Benghazi.

The Municipality of Benghazi announced that the team will conduct surveying and complete the airport’s design plans within set timelines.

The visit follows the announcement by the Fund’s Director-General of the launch of the second phase of the Greater Benghazi development project. This phase includes several strategic projects in the city.

Last Friday, an engineering team from South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction also visited targeted sites in Benghazi. These projects are part of the second phase of the city’s development plan.

The projects include a comprehensive sewer network for the entire city, the completion of the third ring road up to Sidi Younis Island, and the construction of two hospitals with a capacity of 100 beds each in the city’s west and east. Several other projects are also included in the Development Fund’s second phase plan to improve services and infrastructure in Greater Benghazi.

Last month, the Director-General of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund, Belgassim Haftar, along with the Executive Director of the Reconstruction Fund for Derna and Affected Cities, welcomed a United Nations delegation led by Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Georgette Gagnon, in Tripoli. The meeting centered on advancing stability and development efforts in Derna.

During the discussion, the Belgassim Haftar presented a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Derna and other affected areas. This plan includes significant projects such as rebuilding infrastructure, improving public housing, upgrading sewage systems, and constructing and repairing dams, all adhering to the Fund’s established methodology.

On her part, Gagnon expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing development in Derna and emphasized the UN’s commitment to maintaining strong coordination and cooperation to achieve shared goals. She highlighted the importance of these efforts for the citizens of Derna and other impacted regions.

Libya has embarked on substantial reconstruction and development initiatives following years of conflict that left many areas devastated.
