The Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund has held extensive talks with British and Polish consulting firms to advance redevelopment plans for the Sabri district and central Benghazi, as part of broader efforts to modernise urban infrastructure and support long-term sustainable development in eastern Libya.
The meeting was chaired by Engineer Belgassem Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, alongside Engineer Mohamed Al-Hassadi, Head of the Reconstruction Committee for the Sabri Area and Central Benghazi. Representatives from British consultancy PD&P and Polish firm APA also attended the discussions.
During the meeting, participants reviewed a series of urban planning proposals and examined the master plan prepared for the targeted redevelopment areas. The discussions focused on establishing an integrated urban vision designed to support sustainable growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
Officials assessed a range of technical and planning aspects related to the proposed projects, including implementation mechanisms and development priorities. The plans form part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at rehabilitating key districts and upgrading the urban landscape of Benghazi.
A major focus of the meeting was the preliminary design of the Benghazi waterfront project. Participants reviewed the initial concept for the corniche development and discussed its architectural and planning features, which are intended to enhance the city’s coastal frontage while preserving and promoting Benghazi’s urban identity and aesthetic character.
The proposed waterfront development is expected to become a key component of the wider regeneration programme, contributing to improved public spaces, tourism potential, and economic activity in the city.
The discussions are part of ongoing efforts by the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund and the Reconstruction Committee for the Sabri district and central Benghazi to oversee the planning and preparation stages of strategic development projects. The initiatives are being developed in cooperation with international specialised firms to ensure modern planning standards and sustainable urban growth.
The redevelopment of Sabri and central Benghazi represents one of the most significant urban renewal efforts currently underway in Libya, reflecting broader reconstruction plans aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, revitalising city centres, and supporting economic development across the country.
