A high-level United Nations delegation has toured major reconstruction and development projects in Derna, praising the speed of completion and the quality of the work underway in the eastern Libyan city.
The delegation was headed by Ulrika Richardson, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya. Saad Al-Zawi, Supervisor of Derna Projects, received the delegation under the direction of Belgasem Khalifa Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund.
Representatives from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNICEF, UNHCR and the World Food Programme joined the visit.
The tour included Al-Salam District, the Derna Valley rehabilitation project, the city’s Corniche redevelopment, Al-Sahaba Mosque, the King Idris I Library at Qasr Al-Zohour and the Martyrs of Storm Daniel Cemetery. The delegation received briefings on the completed work and progress across the reconstruction sites.
According to the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, delegation members praised the rapid pace and construction quality. They said the projects were contributing to the restoration of essential facilities, better public services, improved living conditions and greater stability while preserving Derna’s historical and cultural identity.
The visit also included discussions on expanding cooperation between UN agencies and the Fund to support development programmes and continue reconstruction work across Derna.
