The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has expressed concern over the rising incidents of kidnapping and enforced disappearances driven by political motives in Misrata. The latest incidents involve the abduction of two activists, Mohammed Ishtaiwi and Al-Mu’tasim Aribi.

In a statement, NIHRL called on the Misrata Security Directorate and local security forces to work towards the immediate release of activist Al-Mu’tasim Aribi. The institution held the abductors fully responsible for Aribi’s safety and well-being.

Furthermore, it urged the Attorney General at the Misrata Court of Appeals to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abductions. It emphasized the importance of ensuring that those responsible are prosecuted, aiming to put an end to the culture of impunity for such severe violations.

The institution’s statement highlights the increasing political tensions in Misrata, where abductions are becoming alarmingly frequent. It underlined the urgency of addressing these violations to restore a sense of security and justice in the region.

The statement also called for broader measures to prevent future incidents and protect citizens’ rights.

The recent abductions underscore the precarious security situation in Libya, where political rivalries often result in violence and human rights abuses. NIHRL’s appeal is a stark reminder of the need for immediate action to protect individuals from politically motivated crimes and to uphold the rule of law.
