Arab League Calls for Immediate Withdrawal Of Foreign Forces From Libya

On Wednesday, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces from Libya. He urged the warring parties to stop all hostilities and engage in political dialogue.

During his speech at the UN Security Council session on Libya, Aboul Gheit said that the Arab League held a clear position on the Libyan crisis, stressing the necessity of withdrawing all foreign forces and preventing the flow of arms into the country.

He pointed out that foreign interference in the form of a continued flow of arms and mercenaries to Libya was exacerbating the situation.

Aboul Gheit emphasized that the Egyptian initiative gave impetus to the current road map, which was agreed upon in Berlin Conference to settle the Libyan crisis.

Libya has descended into chaos since the NATO-backed overthrow of leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Since 2014, it has been split between the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Khalifa Haftar and supported by a parallel administration, in the east.
