The Cabinet of the Libyan Government-designate, led by Prime Minister Osama Hammad, has approved the establishment of an eye hospital in the city of Sebha.
According to Government Resolution No. 326 of 2024, the new facility, named “Sabha Eye and Surgery Hospital,” will operate as an independent legal entity with its own financial system and will be included in the state’s general budget. It will be directly overseen by the Ministry of Health, as per the announcement made on the government’s Facebook page.
The second article of the resolution mandates the Ministry of Health to undertake all necessary actions to approve the hospital’s organisational structure and appoint a director, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
This move is part of a broader initiative to improve healthcare infrastructure in Libya, particularly in regions that have historically lacked specialised medical facilities. The establishment of the Sabha Eye and Surgery Hospital is expected to significantly enhance ophthalmological care in the southern part of the country, providing vital services to a population in need.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
