Members of Libya’s House of Representatives and the High Council of State have called for the preservation of the country’s civil nature, the promotion of the democratic process through legislative and presidential elections, and the expulsion of foreign military forces from Libyan territory.

This call was made at the conclusion of two simultaneous workshops organized by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday and Tuesday in Tunis. The workshops focused on strengthening the role of the legislative authority in reforming and developing Libya’s security sector.

In a statement released by UNSMIL on its official website, the participants urged a clear separation between security and military functions. They emphasized the importance of maintaining civilian oversight over security forces to ensure that military activities are not intertwined with political or civilian affairs.

Furthermore, the committees called on UNSMIL to initiate a dialogue between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State aimed at unifying the executive authority and sovereign positions within Libya.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to joint efforts to implement the recommendations of this workshop and previous initiatives aimed at reforming and developing the security sector. They underscored that these efforts are essential for ensuring a safe and stable environment for all Libyans.
