Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has welcomed the signing of Libya’s “Document of Principles,” describing the roadmap as an important breakthrough in efforts to end the country’s long-running political division.

The document was signed by the House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Presidential Council as part of a renewed push to end Libya’s transitional phase and move the country towards national elections.

Aboul Gheit said the agreement reflects a strong sense of national responsibility among the Libyan parties involved. He added that it shows a clear desire to place Libya’s higher national interests above political disputes, while preserving the country’s sovereignty, territorial unity, and stability.

The Arab League chief said the roadmap marks an important step towards stability, especially as it builds on recent signs of consensus in Libya. These include the unification of the national budget and the approval of the National Reconciliation Charter.

Under the roadmap, Libya is expected to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections no later than 17 February 2027. The plan also calls for the unification of sovereign institutions, economic and financial reforms, and the protection of the unity of state institutions.

The Arab League renewed its full support for Libya’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, stressing that any solution to the crisis must come from the Libyan people themselves, without foreign interference.

The agreement comes as Libya continues to face deep institutional divisions and competing political authorities. Supporters of the roadmap hope it can create a clearer path towards elections, reunified institutions, and a more stable political process.
