Foreign Minister of Libya’s Interim Government Urges UN To Appointment New Envoy To Libya

Libya’s eastern-based Interim Government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdel-Hadi AlHwaij, has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging him to appoint a new special envoy to Libya.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the appointment of a new envoy to Libya would help to facilitate dialogue between the warring parties, restart the political, security, and economic tracks, and help achieve a sustainable solution to the crisis in Libya in accordance with national principles.

The national principles include the fight against terrorism, the expulsion of mercenaries and foreign extremists from the country, stopping the flow of weapons, ending foreign interference, and finding a solution that is Libyan-led under the auspices of the of the United Nations.

On 12 March, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Stephanie Williams as the Acting Special Representative and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). This is after former SRSG Ghassan Salame resigned on 2 March 2020 due to health reasons.
