Erdogan Says Egypt’s Actions in Libya Are Illegal

On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Egypt of violating international law through its actions in Libya and its support for the eastern-based forces of commander Khalifa Haftar.

Erdogan said that Turkey was “preparing jointly with the United Nations to conclude a recent agreement with Libya”, according to a Reuters report.

He added that Turkey had “taken responsibility in Libya, and we will continue to do so until the end… We will not allow the Libyans to confront armed aggression alone… The steps undertaken by Egypt to support Hafter are illegal.”

“Abu Dhabi is carrying out piracy activities by sending funds and weapons to Haftar illegally and this is unacceptable… while we stand with a legitimate government fighting the putschists,” Erdogan added.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Thursday that Egypt would not stand idle in the face of any direct threat to Egyptian and Libyan security after lawmakers allied with Haftar urged Cairo to intervene militarily in the country’s civil war.
