Libyan MPs Demand UNSMIL to Clarify GNA and Turkey Agreement

Members of Parliament, Issa Al-Uraibi, and Ziyad Deghaim have demanded the United Nations Mission Support (UNSMIL) in Libya to clarify the recent statement issued by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding a new agreement with Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, who leads the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).

Al-Uraibi and Deghaim stressed in a joint statement on Sunday that the UN mission should remember that the Presidential Council is deficient in legitimacy and does not represent the entire Libyan people.

The two deputies pointed out that any political agreement must be agreed upon by the Presidential Council in addition to the approval of the House of Representatives.

On July 18th, Erdogan said that Turkey was “preparing jointly with the United Nations to conclude a recent agreement with Libya”, according to a Reuters report.

In December 2019, Turkey signed with the GNA, which is problematically an non-elected interim government, two MoUs on defence and gas drilling in the Mediterranean.

The maritime border agreement was rejected by several countries such as Egypt, Greece, Cyprus and the UAE and described as an illegal act that violates the sovereignty of Mediterranean states.
