The Libyan government has extended its condolences and support to Spain following severe floods in the southeastern regions, particularly the Valencian Community, according to Atalayar news website.

In a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Libyan authorities expressed their sorrow for the loss of life and property damage caused by the disaster, underlining their readiness to assist the Spanish people.

The statement read, “We have followed with great sorrow and concern the devastating news of the floods that have impacted southeastern Spain, especially the Valencian Community, and caused significant human and material loss.”

The Libyan government has indicated its willingness to deploy armed forces and military personnel to aid the flood-affected areas, a gesture of solidarity and friendship between the two nations.

“While we fully appreciate the commendable efforts made by the Spanish authorities in their rescue and relief operations, the Libyan government, armed forces, and army personnel stand ready to offer support and assistance,” the Foreign Ministry continued.

This offer reflects the strong ties between Libya and Spain, a bond strengthened by shared experiences of mutual aid.

The Libyan government’s response also highlights a shared understanding of the devastation caused by such natural disasters. In September 2023, Libya itself endured severe flooding after storm Daniel hit the region, leading to the collapse of dams along the Wadi Derna river and resulting in the loss of over 11,000 lives in eastern Libya.

Following this tragedy, Spain promptly provided humanitarian assistance to Libya, deploying specialised rescue teams and essential supplies through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and contributing over one million euros in aid.
