On Monday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) praised the successful conduct of municipal elections in the first group of 58 councils, describing it as a pivotal step toward reinforcing democracy in the country.

The polls, which recorded a remarkable 74% voter turnout, showcased the commitment of Libyan citizens to shaping their local governance and advancing national stability.

In a statement, UNSMIL congratulated the Libyan people for their active participation and commended the High National Election Commission (HNEC) for organizing a well-structured, inclusive, and technically sound electoral process.

The mission also recognized the critical role of security forces in ensuring a safe and secure environment for the elections to proceed smoothly.

The UN mission emphasized the broader significance of the municipal elections, noting that they serve as a foundation for fostering accountability and responsive governance while enhancing the legitimacy of Libya’s institutions. It reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Libya’s democratic journey and helping to ensure that election outcomes align with the will of the people.

The elections saw 186,055 registered voters, including 130,000 men and 56,000 women, casting their ballots across 352 polling centers. These were divided into 419 stations for men and 358 for women. A total of 1,786 candidates contested in 159 lists, alongside 545 individuals who participated under the individual system, with 470 men and 17 women among them.

HNEC reported that the elections were conducted across 58 municipalities spread over 16 electoral offices, showcasing a transparent and well-coordinated process. The high turnout reflects the eagerness of Libyan citizens to engage in local governance and play a role in determining their future.

The successful municipal elections come when Libya continues to navigate political and institutional challenges. By empowering citizens to elect their local representatives, the elections provide a critical platform for decentralization, better service delivery, and addressing the needs of local communities.

Municipal councils play a vital role in bridging the gap between national policies and community-level implementation. The elections also underscore Libya’s collective desire for democratic progress and lay the groundwork for further political and institutional reforms.

UNSMIL emphasized that the municipal elections are more than a procedural success; they represent a beacon of hope for Libya’s ongoing efforts to achieve stability, unity, and sustainable governance. The mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Libya in its electoral endeavors and encouraging dialogue among stakeholders to overcome challenges.
