The Libyan Embassy in Rome has announced arrangements with Italy’s ITA Airways to resume direct flights between Libya and Italy starting 12 January 2025.

Libya’s Ambassador to Italy, Muhannad Said Younis, met with Giorgio Garbagnio, Head of International Affairs at ITA Airways, to finalise the preparations.

The first flight will depart from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport. Initially, two weekly flights will operate as part of the first phase, with plans to expand routes to other Libyan international airports in the future.

Ambassador Younis affirmed his commitment to facilitating any challenges the airline might face during its operations. He highlighted the importance of this step in strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing air connectivity between the two nations.

The resumption of direct flights follows years of suspension due to the European Union’s aviation ban on Libyan airlines, imposed nearly a decade ago for safety concerns. In September 2024, Libya’s Government of National Unity officially announced the first flight from Mitiga to Rome, marking a significant milestone in restoring aviation links.

The renewed air connection aims to boost economic and trade cooperation between Libya and Italy, facilitating easier travel for business and tourism. Both nations view this as part of a broader effort to enhance their diplomatic and economic ties.

This development reflects ongoing efforts to rebuild Libya’s aviation sector and improve its global integration following years of disruption.
