Italy’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano, arrived in Tripoli on Monday for an official visit, signaling Italy’s continued commitment to supporting Libya’s stability and development.
Accompanied by the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, General Portolano’s visit highlights the enduring partnership between the two nations, rooted in shared strategic interests and long-standing cooperation.
Upon arrival at Mitiga Airport, General Portolano was welcomed by Luigi Tofano, Commander of the Bilateral Assistance and Support Mission in Libya (MIASIT).
The visit includes meetings with Libyan military leaders and a visit to Italian troops stationed in the country. General Portolano’s trip coincides with the holiday season, emphasizing Italy’s dedication to its personnel deployed in Libya.
Italy has historically played a key role in aiding Libya during critical periods. During the 2016 battle against ISIS, the Italian Ministry of Defence established a field hospital near Misrata Airbase.
This facility initially served military needs but later transitioned to civilian use, providing vital healthcare services to Libyan citizens. Over its operation, the hospital performed more than 1,000 surgeries and offered over 40,000 medical treatments.
However, as part of a recent restructuring of Italy’s military mission in Libya, the hospital was closed.
This restructuring has refocused the mission on specialized military training and technical support, aligning with Libya’s current priorities. Italy’s presence in Libya now includes around 100 personnel stationed in Misrata and Tripoli, offering targeted assistance in areas such as healthcare training and special forces development.
General Portolano’s visit underscores Italy’s continued support for Libya as the country navigates complex political and security challenges. Italy remains a steadfast ally, offering technical expertise, healthcare assistance, and military training to strengthen Libya’s institutions and promote its sovereignty.
